Teacher Education Course (Graduate School for the Teaching Profession)

The Gifu University Graduate School for the Teaching Profession is a special graduate school that practically trains students with advanced pedagogical skills for immediate application in the development of educational programming and its use. Established in 2008, it partners with education committees and has pursued the training of school leaders in Gifu Prefecture. On this occasion, two new courses, the school administrator course and the educational development and praxis course, have been created in order to meet the needs of the region and local schools.

Study at a graduate school focusing on pedagogy is intended to foster the skills needed to resolve pedagogical issues to be addressed by schools and the local region. To that end, we offer an educational system that works in partnership with the education committee and schools in Gifu Prefecture. Through theoretical and practical coursework at the university, a plan is crafted to solve specific local issues. These are then employed in practice at schools towards the development of new programming. This is then summarized in a report which contributes to improvements for these schools and the region itself.

School Administrators Prepare Course

The School Administrator Preparation Course trains leaders poised to contribute to the creation of new schools and lead Gifu Prefecture itself in the future. It is intended for current educational personnel seeking to develop school management skills they can use to autonomously and cooperatively manage education facilities. Through coursework and practical training in educational policy and school management, they can thus develop skills in school administration, school improvement, school evaluation, and crisis management, to form the skillset they will need for administration of schools.

Education Practice Development

The Education Practice Development Course trains persons poised to become "middle leaders" to play a pivotal role in schools and the region. It is intended for current educational personnel seeking to develop a skillset in course development, clinical pedagogy, and special support of schooling, as well as new educational personnel who will be working in schools. It seeks graduates of the pedagogy department who wish to develop more advanced practical skills than the formative body of training they received in their undergraduate training. Through these courses, practical training at schools, and special research that draw on the latest findings in course development, clinical pedagogy, and special support of schooling, the students may enhance their pedagogic skillset.

Clinical Psychology for Education

This course is aimed to train graduate students to be certified(public,and/or clinical,school) psychologists for education in Japan, who are able to be candidate for school counselor and expert in various settings. We welcome students who have completed an undergraduate course of psychology and want to be a counselor / psychotherapist as a profession. As clinical practicums take place in Japan, applicants need profound ability of listening and speaking of Japanese language.

The curriculum has been designed to provide a deep understanding on a wide perspective on topics not solely related to Japanese education, but also related to other fields such as Japanese literature, Japanese linguistics, and Chinese classics. Social Studies

This course has a twofold purpose. One is to conduct further research and studies into the practical and theoretical aspects of social studies education in elementary and junior high school, and on education of geography, history, and civics in high school. The other is to provide a solid foundation in the study of such social/human sciences as geography, history, philosophy, ethics, sociology, politics, economics, and law which form the basis of social studies. Prospective students, having a wide perspective of school education and human relations and wishing to deepen and broaden their knowledge to become expert in their field regarding social studies education, are encouraged to apply.

English

In order to provide English educators with the tools to be able to cope in the information age, it is necessary to make them become familiar with multimedia, including the internet, various kinds of CD-ROMs, and so on, for them to be more effective in the classroom. Graduate students will be required to compose and submit their reports and thesis in multimedia format or E-mail, and therefore, it is highly desirable that applicants have the appropriate computer knowledge and skills prior to applying to the department.

Science

Mathematics

Students with a strong desire to pursue further research in mathematics and mathematics education are encouraged to become graduate students. Historically, research in mathematics has been conducted in the East and the West, and recent developments have seen this field becoming a separate, independent field of study separate from the general field of science. In addition, mathematics education has become an important topic of research. With increased use of computers, it appears mathematics will increase in importance outside of the education field. Therefore, entering students will be encouraged to work at their own pace until they can develop a taste for doing mathematics. Then, those who acquire the requisite skills and learn to enjoy doing calculations or demonstrating theorems will be asked to challenge themselves to develop the necessary tools to be able to use and practice their mathematical skills in all facets of their life, and not just in education.

Technology

The purpose of this course is to provide junior high school technology education instructors further training to gain expert knowledge and practical skills in technology education. To achieve this goal, students will receive a fundamental education that will instill high-level research skills in such fields as electricity, mechanics, information technology, woodworking, and so on. Students will then utilize these skills to conduct practical and theoretical research in technology education.

Home Economics

Students will carry out research and studies on domestic science education involving basic research in such fields as clothing, foods, housing, home management,, child rearing, and so on. In particular, close attention will be paid to distinctive features of lifestyle and environment, on a regional basis, with the aim of developing, comprehensive, systematic studies of lifestyles.

Arts ＆ Physical

Music

The curriculum is designed to provide students with the ability to discover and nurture future talents and introduce them into the wonderful world of music. This task is accomplished through an integrated, theoretical, and practical approach to how music education should be conducted. By studying the intimate interrelationships among the diverse fields of singing, musical instruments, composition, conducting, musicology, and so on, graduate students will gain better insights into the field of music education.

Health & Physical

Research in health and physical education is conducted in such areas as exercise, sports, and health, and all of these fields can be integrated into various other fields as well. This course has been designed to provide students with distinctive attributes to be able to pursue deeper research of these areas in related fields such as school physical education, lifelong education, and so on. Prospective students should have prior knowledge of the practical aspects of health and physical education in order to be able to pursue their chosen research topic in a positive, confident manner.

Curriculum Development

Learning knowledge and skills about curriculum development, especially, (1) Designing students' rich learning processes, (2) Improvement Teachers' activity and school systems, (3) New literacies about language, environment, information. Based on these knowledge and skills, graduate students promote thier own practical researches. For graduate students who are working school at distance locations, lectures and semiars are delivered through interactive video conference systems.
