Applications and Admission

1. Academic Year

The academic year consists of two semesters, the first from April 1 to September 30 and the second from October 1 to March 31, including the summer and winter holidays. Almost all classes are offered only in Japanese.

2. Graduation requirements of the Undergraduate Program

In order to graduate, students must obtain a teaching license for junior high school and elementary school. The list of required subjects for the course includes two sessions of practical training, one at an elementary school, and one at a middle school. During these sessions, you will need to conduct lessons in Japanese. In addition, you must participate in practical sessions of welfare work experience. These are conducted entirely in Japanese.

3. Qualifications for Application to the Undergraduate Program

Applicants must meet the following (1), (2) and (3). Moreover, you must have taken the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), conducted by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) and TOEFL. Your TOEFL Score will be translated into a score for the Faculty of Education's entrance examination, that is the short essay, the department test or the practical test.

(1) Applicants must not hold Japanese nationality.

(2) Applicants must meet one of the following 5 criteria by March 31 of the year of application.

a) Those who have completed twelve years of school education overseas.

b) Those recognized as having academic ability equivalent to the above and who are approved by the Minister of Education.

c) Those who have been awardedan International Baccalaureate by the Baccalaurean Office in Switzerland and have reached the age of eighteen.

d) Those who have been awarded an Abitur by the Federal Republic of Germany and have reached the age of eighteen.

e) Those who have been awarded a Baccalaureate by the French Republic and have reached the age of eighteen.

(3) Applicants must have "Student" status under the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act, or be expected to obtain that status.

4. Application Procedure and Entrance Examination

Obtain an application form from the Admissions Division, Student Affairs Department at the address below. Detailed information on the application procedure and entrance examination is provided in the application form.

Applicants should submit the application form to the Admissions Division following the procedure described on the form. Upon receipt by the Admissions Division, an identification card for the examination will be sent to the applicant. With this card, the applicant may take the entrance examination on the date and at the location stated on the application form. The date and the place of the announcement of successful applicants are also given on the application form.

Successful applicants will also be notified by mail.

5. Admission to the Graduate School

Those who wish to enroll as graduate students in the master's program must meet the requirements as listed in section 6 - "Qualifications for Admission to Graduate School" and must take the entrance examination administered by the graduate school. The entrance examination of the Graduate School of Education, which is only carried out in the Japanese language, is held once a year in October. Successful candidates will enroll in April of the following year.

Information about the application procedure and the entrance examination is given in section 7 - "Application Procedure and Entrance Examination". Prior to taking the entrance examination, it is advisable to enroll as a research student (see 8).

6. Qualifications for Admission to Graduate School

Applicants must satisfy the following criteria by March 31 of the year of application.

Those who have a bachelors degree or expect to receive one by March 31 of the year of application; or
Those who have completed a 16-year course of school education in a foreign country or expect to complete it by March 31 of the year of application; or have been judged by the graduate school of Gifu University to have scholastic achievement equal to or greater than that of a person with an ordinary bachelor's degree.
Those who have reached the age of 22 years old.

7. Application Procedure and Entrance Examination

Application forms are available from the faculty. Detailed information on the application procedure and entrance examination is provided on the form. Note that this is written entirely in Japanese.

Applicants should submit the necessary forms to the Student Affairs Section of the Faculty of Education according to the procedure described on the form. Upon receipt, an identification card for the examination will be sent to the applicant. With the card, the applicant may take the entrance examination on the date and at the location stated on the form. The date and location of the announcement for successful applicants are included in the application form. Successful applicants will also be notified by mail.

8. Research Students (Non-Degree Programs)

Most international students at Gifu University prepare for the Graduate Entrance Examination by enrolling for six months to one year as a research student prior to taking the examination.

To qualify as a research student, the candidate must have a bachelor's degree in a field identical or similar to that of the faculty to which they are applying, have completed 16 years of school education, or expect to have completed it by March 31 of the year of application. Please note that applicants to the Faculty of Education must have passed at least level 2 of the Japanese Proficiency Test.

The period of enrollment of a research student is one year as a rule, but it can be extended under special circumstances.

Application Procedures

First, look for an academic advisor who is qualified to supervise your research by following the appropriate URL. Next, send an email to the advisor with your resume, your research plan, and a copy of your graduation certificate(s) and your academic transcript. When you have been approved for admission by a prospective academic advisor, contact the Student Affairs section (E-mail: kyoiku*gifu-u.ac.jp) to obtain the application and bank transfer form for the entrance examination fee.

The entrance examination fee must be transferred to the designated bank by the deadline. If you do not live in Japan, you may need to ask friends or relatives who live in Japan to make the payment for you. Successful applicants will be notified after about one month.
